African country Uganda has overtaken Ethiopia in coffee export now, according to a report released Tuesday in capital Kampala by, Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.

Ugandan Government official said the country exported 793,445 60-kg bags of coffee in May this year, earning 243 million U.S. dollars.
Ministry said it’s a big achievement “Uganda’s coffee industry has reached a historic milestone. In May 2025, Uganda emerged as Africa’s leading coffee exporter delivering a record 47,606.7 tons and surpassing Ethiopia’s previous export in the same duration,”
Ministry said it’s a decisive shift in the continent’s coffee trade dynamics its added “In May 2025, Uganda’s volume exceeded Ethiopia’s 43,481.02 tons
The ministry highlighted the coffee sector’s extraordinary growth in last few years, improved quality standards and firm government support.
Official said “Through stringent quality controls, extensive farmer training programs, and improved access to high-quality inputs, Ugandan coffee has become highly prized in global markets for its superior quality and distinctive flavor profiles,”
The Ugandan ministry said “the production of coffee is expected to increase further more in the coming time, because the main harvest season now underway in key coffee-growing regions of the country.
Currently Uganda’s exporting coffee mainly to Italy, India, China, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Sudan, Algeria, the United States and Morocco.
During the period of June 2024 to May 2025, Uganda generated $ 2.09 billion revenue compared to 6.08 million bags in the previous period by exporting total of 7.43 million 60 kg bags of coffee
Italy emerged as the top importing country of Uganda coffee which shares 39% of exports, while Europe dominated with a total 67% market share. In May 2025, Uganda’s volume crossed Ethiopia’s 43,481.02 tonnes of coffee, it’s a significant shift in the Africa’s coffee trade business.
